Topic 9: Web Awareness II

Discuss what digital citizenship means to you and how this will be demonstrated in your classroom.  Choose a division (grade level) and discuss what aspects you would include that are appropriate for this level. Would you focus more on rules and regulations or on educating the members? How do you find a balance?
  • Digital Citizenship encompasses the same qualities that active and responsible citizenship does, except online with technology. It means understanding what responsible citizenry looks like, what the positive/negative implications are, and how to use it appropriately.
  • As I've requested junior high, grades 7-9, that's the division I'm imagining here:
  • I'd love to implement what my TA from PS1 did. Every day, students (by rotating through the class list) would update the class Facebook account and class Twitter account. They'd write about what they did that day, what they learned, and/or if there are any updates/reminders/due dates that parents and students should know about. I'd love to have a classroom where social media is embedded, student-friendly, and parent-friendly. I think that this provides students with the opportunity to understand these platforms, and provides teachable moments on how to use them.
  • I also love the idea of classroom blogging. I think that each student should have their own individual blog that they can personalize, but I also think that the teacher should model this with their own blog.
  • I think it'd be best to find a balance between setting rules/regulations on these platforms, but also having fun with it. By the junior high level, most students would be familiar with these platforms, so the teacher could talk about what the students may not know: extra features, privacy settings, etc.
  • I'd implement the THINK motto, and have it visible in the classroom with any of the following graphics:

Hey Sheree,

Loved your definition of digital citizenship. It is so true it really is no different than teaching your students about being active and responsibility citizens in their world. They should also be active and responsible citizens online and should really think about whether they would post or do the same things online as they would in real life. I think too many students hide behind their screens and don't understand the implications of what they put online can have.

Also loved the daily updates on Facebook and Twitter your PSI teacher used. I think by enabling students to use social media in the classroom will make teaching about digital citizenship a lot easier and more personal. What grade was this for?

Awesome ideas, thanks!

Your blog is short and to the point! I feel the same about having social media in the classroom. It is not going away anytime soon so instead of avoiding it, make it fun and the students will have a great time participating. I haven't had the experience with any of my TA's with social media, but it sounds like it was a great learning experience.

Sheree,

I love the idea you had in your blog post about having social media embedded into your classroom with a classroom Twitter and Facebook page. Creating teachable moments with social media is an awesome idea. In my PS2 my class had a Twitter page and during Daily 5 they were allowed to post whatever they wanted on the Twitter page as a part of their work on writing. The THINK model is a great idea to teach out students and by having that poster up in the classroom will be helpful to the students. One question I had was, what if some students in your classroom are unfamiliar with these platforms in the higher grades compared to the rest of your class. What would you do in this situation? Great post!

Hey There,
I really liked how you laid out your blog entry.
It's kind of funny how we even need to discuss digital citizenship separately from citizenship/being a good person. But it is important! Students feel an anonymity when they are online and so much of the harm comes from this feeling so it is important to discuss digital citizenship separately. I really like the think rule and the graphics, definitely something I will keep in mind for my future classrooms!

Hi Sheree,

Thanks for your insights on this particular topic! I really found your ideas of what your PSI TA did to be really intriguing. I think these would be great ways to incorporate the use of Social Media into the classroom while allowing the students to have control over their learning and how to be responsible digital citizens!

The THINK concept is an idea that I haven't really heard of before and I love it! This is something that I will definitely be taking away from this particular topic!

I hope all is well.

Cheers,

Kyle
